A screen attached to a frame with a transmitter was carried into space by a huge balloon (that's the technical explanation!). The screen showed winning and shortlisted images from the British Journal of Photography's Portrait of Humanity Awards from 2019 and 2020 to broadcast "a message of peace and unity from humankind to space — and possibly even our extra-terrestrial counterparts."
Drawn from Portrait of Humanity, a movement seeking to prove there is more that unites us than sets us apart, the exhibited images showcase the many faces of communities across the world, celebrating humanity in its countless variations.
If you haven't heard of the Portrait of Humanity before, its an International Awards series from the British Journal of Photography that aims to "show that across oceans and borders, there is more that unites us than sets us apart".
With the world as disconnected as ever, it sometimes seems like we're connected only by a deadly virus that's globally damaged families, relationships, industries, economies. Yet it feels like the images entered into this amazing award bring us all a little closer.
Now one of the most viewed photographic exhibitions in global history, the award celebrates the many faces of humanity, and the everyday moments that bind us together.
You can watch the video of the exhibition here.
It will be interesting to see the portraits entered into the 2021 Award. What images will emerge - both inspiring and heart-wrenching - from a year that has given us record temperatures, fires, floods and disease in biblical proportions?
Enter this year's Portrait of Humanity Award before 22nd October 2020.

From Magnum's first ladies, Eve Arnold and Inge Morath, to the new "nominee" members who are redressing the gender balance at the agency, women have had a small but important part to play in Photography's most famous institution.
Marilyn Monroe Resting by Eve Arnold (credit: Magnum Photos)
Listed below are the current female members of Magnum. We will be covering the stories of some of these talented ladies over the coming months: check back here for updates.
Bargirl, Havana, Cuba, 1954 by Eva Arnold (credit: Magnum photos)
The 4-year process starts with Magnum will putting out a request for applications. The agency is a co-operative, run by its members. Each year they meet to discuss the organisation's affairs and during this weekend a day is set aside for reviewing potential new members' portfolios. The members will vote and successful applicants will be invited to become a "Nominee Member".
This gives Nominees the chance for them to get to know Magnum and for Magnum members to get to know them. There's no binding commitments on either side in this category of membership.
After 2 years, the Nominees can apply to become Associate Members by submitting a further portfolio of work. It's at this stage they get access to the full facilities on offer by its offices and worldwide representation and are bound by all the rules and responsibilities of the agency.
A further portfolio of work can be presented for consideration 2 years later, the acceptance of these leads to the election to Full Membership, an accolade that lasts a lifetime.
Finally, Full Members can become 'Contributors'after 23 years with the agency.
Magnum Estate Members is a category set aside for founding members or deceased photographers who's archives and posthumous projects contribute to Magnum's huge and important legacy.
Acceptance to Magnum is generally only enjoyed by one or two photographers each year but in 2015, 6 new Nominees were accepted, including 2 females.
Submissions for each year generally close in January of the year of entry.

Of the Awards themselves, CV Magazine said: “With constant shifts within the industry, it is vital that firms stay ahead of the curve and adapt to the trials and tribulations of the industry. Through this awards programme, we recognise innovation at its finest whilst rewarding those who influence, engage and endeavour to provide the very best services. Congratulations to all our winners and best of luck for the future.”
As for 100Prints, the decision to make the move to support only female photographers was a difficult one as we represented some true talent as the “old” 100Prints and many hours of blood, sweat and tears had gone into the old format site. However, since the re-brand and bringing onboard our brilliant women artists, we really haven’t looked back! There’s some amazing female talent out there and the support of these lovely ladies, their friends and family, and our own loyal fan base has been heart-warming, to say the least.
According to The British Journal of Photography’s Female In Focus Guide, which highlights gender disparity in the industry, 80% of photography graduates are women, while only 15% of professional photographers and only 1 in 9 photography award winners are women.
We’ll be exploring this imbalance more in the future, but for now we are just very excited to congratulate and thank all our amazing contributors and are really looking forward to the future of 100Prints.
Well done and thank you, Ladies! This is all about you! x

]]>Photography Collections don't have to cost a fortune. In fact, many collectors look for something new and original that catches their eye and doesn't cost a lot. Star of this year's John Lewis Christmas Advert, Sir Elton John, is a well-known photography collector. An exhibition of his collection, ‘The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection’ was a recent smash at the Tate and has been turned into a book.
He extols the virtues of finding the unusual and new:
“I often go around private galleries and collections and I see all the big obvious photographs by the masters, which are great, but I’m thinking, where is your personal selection? Where is the art that cost $150? …That’s the great thing about photography – you can walk into a gallery and see something that’s really beautiful and inspiring and it will cost you, well, 500 quid.”
Many of our prints are available for less than £100.
And, as its Christmas, we are also offering a discount code - valid until New Year's Eve - for 20% off anything in our gallery, including the new £100 Collection - making them only £80!
Just add XMASLOVE2018 at the checkout for 20% off across the site.

]]>Recently, we had the fantastic news that 100 Prints Contributor, Andy Scaysbrook's portrait of a homeless ex-British soldier, Derek, has been selected for publication in the 2018 Portrait of Britain book, sponsored by the prestigious British Journal of Photography.
Derek was shot as a part of a homeless project entitled, The Shadow Dwellers, which tells the story of the homeless people living on the streets of Bournemouth, UK. Working in collaboration with the charity, Hope For Food, Andy was asked to get involved as they were seeking ways of engaging with the press to raise awareness and recruit volunteers.
The portrait was selected from 13,000 entries to the annual award which is sponsored by The British Journal Of Photography the worlds oldest photographic journal.
We are delighted to announce this print is now for sale on 100Prints. Print only, A4 and only £25 all profits from the sale of this print will go directly to Derek via the lovely people at Hope For Food.
What a brilliant way to start your very own Photography Collection and help a homeless ex-British soldier in the process.

]]>Our contributor, Andy Scaysbrook has spent 30 years as a photojournalist documenting stories from around the world.
This year, a story broke in Bournemouth, Dorset, England, which highlights the growing crisis of homelessness within the UK and we wanted to share it with you as its a subject close to our hearts.
Andy spent every day and night visiting the site to document the inside story. Here's his commentary, watch the video below and make sure you have sound switched on.
Pictures by Andy Scaysbrook. Music by Bonobo feat. Nick Murphy
On the 4th December, 2017 activists took over a plot of land in Bournemouth, Dorset, England to provide a safe shelter for vulnerable and homeless people who are living on the streets of Bournemouth at Christmas. The local community soon rallied around and provided provisions, tents, sleeping bags, food, medical supplies and a whole lot of love. People from all walks of life became engaged with the community and helped out in any way they could. On the 2nd January, 2018 Bailiffs arrived to execute a warrant to take back the land. This is the story of Camp Sanctuary.

]]>Back in the hazy summer days of 1992, I visited Erwitt's touring exhibition, a retrospective of his career at the Royal Photographic Society in Bath, England. In over forty years of visiting photography exhibitions - which can often be a quiet and contemplative experience - I had never previously experienced people laughing out loud at a show.
Gone was the studious atmosphere that exhibitions often evoke, replaced with raucous and unbridled laughter echoing around the gallery. The atmosphere was more akin to that of a comedy gig than a photography exhibition and with good reason.
A large majority of the exhibition featured many of Erwitt's quite brilliant images from his series on Dogs. Erwitt produced four books on his canine friends including, 'Son of Bitch' (1974), 'To the Dogs' (1992), 'Dog Dogs' (1998) and 'Woof' (2005). All these images were simply first class; technically perfect and with a wry sense of humour that was the essence of his work. One fellow Magnum photographer often referred to Erwitt as "Half man, half Dog!"
But Erwitt was no one trick pony, far from it. He was also renowned for his brilliant portrait and documentary work and was originally asked to join the esteemed photographic agency, Magnum, by its founder Robert Capa. An honour indeed.
In 1964, while on assignment for Newsweek magazine, Erwitt spent a week in Cuba as a guest of Fidel Castro. There, he captured now-iconic photographs of the beloved Cuban president along with the revolutionary leader Che Guevara.
These images have inspired many photographers, myself included.. They hold a special place in history, having an almost Hollywood quality to them. The portraits of Che Guevara could be stills from a movie and the images of Fidel Castro amongst his people perfectly captures the special relationship between Castro and the Cuban people.

His technique is faultless, but he always stresses that the instinct that creates great photography is casual and uncontrollable: "I'll always be an amateur photographer," he says, pointing out that the word amateur comes from the Latin for 'to love'.
"Elliott, has to my mind achieved a miracle," says Henri Cartier-Bresson, "working on a chain-gang of commercial campaigns and still offering a bouquet of stolen photos with a flavour, a smile from his deeper self."
Hear, hear.

Summer is officially over, kids are back to school, nights are drawing in, Christmas is approaching. Some people love the onset of winter, with cosy nights in front of the fire or long walks in the autumn-coloured forests, followed by a hearty roast in a country pub.
Personally, autumn makes me really melancholic - I try to book adventures and activities so I have plans to look forward to, and photography exhibitions give me creative inspiration once the sun has deserted us.
If you're like me and need some inspiration, here’s our list of London Photography Exhibitions showing this autumn. Maybe we’ll see you there!

I wanted to show the perspective of those watching from the golden sands so we ventured down to mingle with the sun tanning hordes and shoot the action from the shoreline. I've shot the Red Arrows on many occasions, it's always an incredible experience; mind boggling on so many levels and once witnessed it definitely leaves an indelible mark on you.

Some official country names aren't commonly used and some are generally shortened - for example, #SaintKittsandNevis' is the least hashtagged country on the list with only 3,388 posts, however, #saintkitts has been hashtagged 5,000 times more, and #stkitts 182,000 times more, so we've left it out of our bottom 10. Ditto #holysee (6,725 posts); it's more widely-used name #vaticancity has over 367,848 posts, so we've left that one out, too.
The remaining countries are small island communities or African countries, all have stories to tell and people waiting to tell them. Some of these are real adventure destinations and you typically won't find a Holiday Inn waiting to welcome you. Take some tea bags.

#saotome by @bortolasbruno on Instgram
Sao Tome's full name is Sao Tome & Principe, which as a hashtag has only been used in 3,113 posts, however, #saotome on its own gained 35,501 posts, putting it no 9 on our 'Top 10 Least Instagrammed' list. It's an island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. And it looks incredible!
#solomonislands by @southpacificnesian on Instagram
The Solomon Islands are a group of islands to the east of Papua New Guinea in Oceania. And you probably don't need to take tea bags, the Islands are a paradise that relies on tourism, has English as its main language and our Queen is also theirs, so we're pretty sure tea will be served, in the afternoon or otherwise.
#comoros by @emmax1782 on Instagram
Southwest of the better-known Seychelles, floating in the Indian Ocean near Mozambique is the number 8 (from the bottom) destination, #comoros. "A tropical charm off the beaten path" as Lonely Planet puts it. #flightsbooked
#nauru by @mopesal on Instagram
Another stunning Island country in Micronesia in the Central Pacific. Sadly Australia has an offshore detention centre for refugees on the island and it has had some terrible press of late.
#marshallislands by @kristinthorogood on Instagram
#marshallislands are an Island country in Micronesia, near the equator, in the Pacific Ocean with a heartbreaking history of destruction. In the 1950's the US dropped 23 nuclear bombs on Bikini Atoll. However, scientists have recently been encouraged to note an abundance of marine life and coral 70 years after it was declared a wasteland. A Taste 2 Travel has a useful write-up on the island country including places to stay and food to sample.
#kiribati by @nellex97 on Instagram
Made up of 33 atolls & reef islands, the island nation of #kiribati in the Central Pacific Ocean is under threat from climate change. With an average height of only 2 meters above sea level, it's the world's lowest-lying country. Get there soon!
#guineabissau by street photographer, @bissau_bonito on Instagram
Nestled on the West African coast and not to be confused with Guinea, #guineabissau is a little-known country, that gets most of its foreign exchange from for its tasty cachew crops, was once owned by the Portuguese and was once known as 'the Slave Coast'. Beautiful colours and light make for a great photography subject.
#equatorialguinea by @optimumafricanexperience on Instagram
Another West African coastal country but further down the coast nearer the equator, the former Spanish colony of #equatorialguinea is made up of mainland territory and 5 islands. Its most lucrative outputs are oil & gas - discovered in the 1990's - yet a large proportion of its population still lives in abject poverty. Beautiful colonial architecture survives and The Cathedral of Santa Isabel in Malabo is well worth a visit.
#centralafricanrepublic by @fabiocaoscorpio on Instagram
Featured in our recent article, #1day1will, #centralafricanrepublic in, well, Central Africa, funnily enough, is rich in diamonds, gold and oil. Yet, as with so much of this area of the world, poverty and war is what the country's people understand. It's worth reading more about this sadly unstable place, the BBC summarises its current standing, here. And do watch the video above, it gives a real feel for the country and an awaiting adventure.
#tuvalu by @eviere on Instagram
And finally, at the bottom of the list of most hashtagged is the countries - or at the top of the least hashtagged if you're a glass half full type - is the stunning #tuvalu, a Polynesian Island Nation in the Pacific Ocean located between Hawaii and Australia and an independent member of the Commonwealth. Have a look through the @eviere's photos to get a feel for just how beautiful this little island paradise is. I think we'll be heading there very soon!

Personally, I lost the love for the platform when I discovered how many tricks are available to buy or unethically grown your follower base. And there seems no way around it. Applying hours of your time to growing a loyal fan based image by image will still take you decades to reach the heady heights Instagrammers with less, erm, patience (and virtue).
However, its still a great place to find some really lovely photography (100 Prints is on there, after all!) and to research your next trip.
With that in mind, we've gathered the top 10 most Instagrammed countries to date (Aug 2017) - perfect fodder for your travel bucket list.
Here goes, we think you’ll be rather surprised by the results!

Tiny little #dubai comes in at no.3, beating behemoths #indonesia and #usa – a surprising achievement for a country that’s only 4,114 km2 (In comparison, the UK is 42,495 km2). Today I want to share with you a project I’ve come across, #1day1will by photographer, Vincent Tremeau. It's a long-term project highlighting “the perspectives of youth and the importance of education in shaping a better world tomorrow”.
"Everything starts from school,” says Tremeau. “It’s where you learn how to live together, it’s where you learn how to think, to be entrepreneurial. If you don’t go to school, you don’t have the fundamental basis to start your life. This project is to show that it’s really important to be very careful about these youth, because they are the next generation, they are the next leaders."
The project has seen him working with young people across 9 war-torn African countries, photographing them dressed up as their ‘future self’ – be that a doctor, teacher, shopkeeper or even the future President of Mali.
Tremeau started the project while visiting the Central African Republic where he spent time with some of the children affected by the long-running civil war. There were so many terrible stories relayed during his conversations with the children that he decided to focus on the future, not the present and he began ‘a game’, taking photos of the children dressed up as what they wanted to be in the future, using props to illustrate and bring the photos to life.
The results were interesting; although many children wanted to do what their parents did (basket maker, teacher, doctor, farmer, driver, diamond collector), there were many children – 80% in one area he visited - who wanted to be soldiers.
Growing up in countries savaged by war, where thousands have been killed and even more displaced, Tremeau was surprised by their answers. Talking to the children revealed the reasons why so many of the children had the same response. ‘To fight the men who killed my brother’, ‘I’ve had to flee my village 12 times’, ‘I want to protect my family’, ‘I want to be like the MONUSCO Soliders, I play soccer with them, they are my friends’.
Many of the children wanted to protect their families and friends, help people or just make a living. Very few of the children cited ‘...it pays well...’ as a reason, although there was one ambitious child whose dream it is to become ‘The President of Mali’.
Read some of their stories below...
Journalist
Nana Farida Saidou, from Niger.
"One day I would like to be a journalist to broadcast information on everything that is going on in my country to the general public."
Nurse
Francoise. 15. Mother to 1-year-old Chance.
“As soon as I wake up in the morning, I wash my baby’s clothes before I go to school. While I am away, my grandmother looks after him. After school, I go to work in the field. Then I cook dinner and we eat together with my grandmother.
I like studying because I know someday it will be useful for me and allow me to become a nurse. But for this to happen, I first need to study, this is how I will be able to then help others to not be in pain as much as I myself suffered.
When I go to school, I am not ashamed of anything. But others cannot understand why I am a student while I already have a child. I tell them that if I study, it is exactly because I want to help my child. Even though others make fun of me, I let them talk and go to school anyway."
President of Mali
Basket Maker
Chandi, Pinga, North Kivu, Depocratic Republic of Congo.
"I would like to learn how to make basket because it will help me in the life to come. This will help my future children, little brothers, my sisters and me. Maybe I will get married with someone irresponsible, dirty or even alcoholic. So these baskets will help me. If I have to get married with such a husband, I will start selling my baskets to cover my children school expenses and buy them food."
Diamonds Collector
Aladi, Carnot, Central African Republic
"One day I will be collecting diamonds here so I can earn a lot of money."
Tremeau calls on photographers and instagrammers to join in – take a photo of a child dressed up as their future selves and share using the #1day1will hashtag.

]]>Morris had a massive influence on photojournalism, being responsible for commissioning and publishing some of the most iconic images of the 20th Century, including 11 from his "Hungarian Brother", Robert Capa's of the D-Day Landings.
“In journalism, one first looks for the meaning, the truth that’s involved in the image – does this image show something important? Is it true or false? The composition, the form, which is more of an aesthetic question, comes second. The ideal picture for a story first has to have meaning and secondly, hopefully, to have form – good composition. Good composition takes the eye to the focal point.” (John Morris, 2016).
We can't truly do justice to an icon so deeply infused in the foundations of Magnum and so will hand over to Magnum themselves for their memorial which includes photos, a video and statements from some of his closest friends and colleagues.

National Geographic have done it again. In their July Magazine photographer, Laurent Ballesta shows us some of the incredible shots he captured from a few hundred feet below the icy surface of Antartica.
It was October 2015 and Laurent had been invited there by filmmaker Luc Jacquet, who was working on a sequel to his 2005 triumph, March of the Penguins. While Jacquet filmed Emperor Penguins, Ballesta and his team were there to document life under the ice.
Luckily for the crew, it was spring when they arrived. In winter the ice reaches 60 miles out to sea. But in springtime, the ice recedes for around 36 days, allowing them to dive through it - and 230 feet down!
A deep-diving photographer, Ballesta has been diving for 30 years, first learning in the Mediterranean Sea. His quests have since taken him 400 feet off the coast of South Africa to photograph rare coelacanths, and a 24-hour journey away from Fakarava, in French Polynesia, to witness the mating of 17,000 groupers. But no one had ever dived this deep under Antarctic Ice.
I will leave Laurent to tell you the story in his own words, we just wanted to show you these amazing photos. More in July's National Geographic Magazine.

]]>We recently had the honour of being invited to one of Bill Jackson's film showings at the House of St Barnabas, London. 100 Prints contributor, Andy Scaysbrook, studied under Bill at the Leamington Spa College and has continued to be inspired by his work ever since.
A photographer & conceptual & installation artist, Bill's artworks are "elemental recordings, the conditions forming an intrinsic part of the process".
"In conceptual art the idea or the concept is the most important aspect of the work. When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art." (Sol LeWitt, American Conceptual art and Minimalism artist.)
This applies to Jackson's works, the concept of time is crucial to his ideas and he employs photography as a tool to explore notions of time and space, exchanging the classic definition of photography as a series of instant glimpses of the world in which we live, to a personal definition of ‘space time’. The combination of art and science as photography is a means to an end rather than the end itself.
'North By East' is a collection of 4 films which are part of a longer ongoing series of slow dissolving images taken at night and encompasses all the light drawing series. The films are a collaborative work with the playwright Dan O’Brien, who is based in Los Angeles, and the poet Tamar Yoseloff, who is based in London, both writers having worked with Bill previously.
This is the first time Bill has worked collaboratively in this way with the two. The soundscapes used in the soundtracks were written and produced by Bill & the brief to the writers was very simple. "'Imagine you are in the dark and thoughts, ideas & conversations come to you in the darkness', I did not want them to illustrate the images but use the images as a springboard for their own journey", said Bill.
Bill says of his latest films: "The works mark a return to installation and projections and looking back over the work it seems I never really left that creative space. The light bulb moment was when I was looking at all the images taken so far (three years work) which had been printed as postcards and taped to my studio wall, not unlike a giant contact sheet. I knew I was doing an artist talk for The House Of St Barnabas, a charity for the homeless. I wasn't keen to do a show and tell so decided to create an event a performance followed by a Q&A with Vikki Nelson from Maestro Arts who has been an invaluable mentor in recent months. I took another look at the wall and saw not a giant contact sheet but a roll of film stills".
It resolved a number of issues Bill had about his work and he found himself in the creative space that he had been missing since getting back into print based work after a 20-year 'break'.
"'North Sea Drawings', 'East Wind Drawings' and 'In Search of Gretel' are created on location where Bill created a field of vision for the light drawings to take place. The unknown is the outcome. The photograph is the evidence of an 'event' that has taken place, a 'performance' that even Jackson himself cannot see in its entirety. During creation, only the process is evident. It’s through the inherent values in photography as a documentary process that he realises the idea." (An excerpt written by Eillen Haring Woods taken from 'About Bill Jackson' from Bill's own website.)
Influenced by Pollock's approach in random mark making and the artist's intervention in that process, Jackson builds a platform for these events to take place. The landscapes are carefully considered and researched by daylight prior to any 'performance', they are then transformed by the night.
The future for Bill's work is very exciting; he will be the filmmaker in residence at Snape Maltings, the home of the Aldeburgh Music Festival, working with their composers and musicians: "My plans for my work generally is to explore the scale of projected images, both single and multiple screens and projections, creating virtual spaces so that the viewer is immersed in both audio and vision. The technology today compared to when I last worked in this arena has exploded with the advance in digital technologies and 4k, 6k and even 8k resolution".
Bill has stills from the film available as Limited Edition Prints, here are a few of our favourites.
